Simplifying EV charging payments

Siemens uses Tieto Banktech payment technology to simplify payment integrations for EV charging stations, support convenient card payments and enable expansion across European markets.

EV charging payments
Paying for EV charging may look simple to the driver, but behind each transaction is a complex ecosystem of charge point operators, payment service providers, acquirers and charging hardware. Siemens needed a simpler way to connect its charging stations to this ecosystem without creating a unique payment integration for every new installation.

The challenge

Simplify payment integrations

Charge point operators typically have agreements with specific acquirers. This means EV charging station manufacturers need to accommodate different payment preferences across installations and markets.

Managing multiple combinations of charge point operators, payment service providers and acquirers adds integration complexity and can slow the large-scale rollout of charging infrastructure.

Siemens wanted to avoid creating unique integrations for each new charging installation and needed a payment partner to simplify the process.

The solution

One hub for charging payments

Tieto Banktech’s payment processing platform acts as a centralized hub connecting Siemens charging terminals with major acquirers and payment service providers.

Together with payment-terminal provider Seitatech, the solution reduces the need for individual integrations across the payment ecosystem.

Payments are outside Siemens’ core expertise, so Tieto Banktech handles the payment process, maintenance and operational efficiency.

The benefits

Less complexity, more flexibility

A centralized payment connection simplifies the EV charging payment ecosystem for Siemens while giving other participants greater flexibility.

  • 1

    Simpler integrations

Siemens can connect charging stations with a wide range of charge point operators, acquirers and payment service providers without building a unique integration for every installation.

  • 2

    More payment flexibility

Charge point operators can retain their preferred acquirers and payment service providers while Siemens uses a common payment infrastructure.

  • 3

    Room for new services

The payment infrastructure leaves the door open for Siemens to offer additional services, such as loyalty programs or revenue-sharing models.

Customer perspective

This groundbreaking payment solution represents a major leap forward in simplifying the electric vehicle charging experience. We are removing barriers and making EV charging as intuitive as fuelling up at a gas station.

European expansion

Supporting the EV charging rollout

The solution is already live in Finland, Norway and Sweden, with plans to expand across the rest of Europe.

The approach benefits participants across the EV charging payment chain. Charge point operators have the flexibility to choose preferred acquirers and payment service providers, while acquirers and payment service providers gain broader opportunities to compete across the ecosystem.

As Siemens continues its rollout, Tieto Banktech provides payment expertise and guidance on the most effective approach for different markets.
