Kotkan Energia relies on Tieto’s Network Information System to enhance its district heating business

Kotkan Energia selected Tieto's SaaS solution because it adapts to their needs and provides a comprehensive, high-quality and functionally robust system.

Kotkan Energia is responsible for the production and distribution of district heating in the Kotka region in Finland. To improve customer service and enhance business efficiency, the company is investing in a more reliable district heating network, including the planning, construction, mapping and maintenance of network assets. Tieto’s NIS (Network Information System), delivered as a cloud service, provides the tools to address these and many other network development requirements.

Kotkan Energia aims to further improve the reliability and functionality of its network information system. Key areas of development include customer experience, analytics, reporting, and the quality of supplier collaboration. In addition, the company seeks to ensure and strengthen operational capability in exceptional situations affecting the district heating network.

“We selected Tieto’s SaaS solution because it adapts to our needs and provides a comprehensive, high-quality and functionally robust solution. In addition, NIS utilises the same geospatial solutions already in use by the City of Kotka. The browser-based solution is user-friendly and also enables reporting and analytics,” says Kirsi Raippalinna, District Heating Network Manager, Kotkan Energia.

“Streamlining processes and access to real-time information through a fully browser-based network information system improve business efficiency. NIS is a versatile solution that, in addition to its core functionalities, offers several other benefits, such as tools for paperless management processes.

High-quality, up-to-date data will become increasingly important for faster reporting and the utilisation of artificial intelligence in the future,” says Niko Jauhiainen, Head of Asset & Data Solutions, Energy & Utilities at Tieto Indtech.

Tieto’s Network Information System (NIS) is a web-based solution, independent of time and location, designed for electricity and district heating distribution networks. The system can also be extended to include the company’s partners, such as external contractors, with appropriate access rights. This supports collaboration and the sharing of accurate, up-to-date information.

NIS enhances key processes for network companies: automation and digitalisation reduce manual work, and the system also supports network asset reporting to the Energy Authority for electricity distribution companies. The solution meets both customer and regulatory information security requirements.
