The challenge
Metsä Tissue, one of the leading manufacturers of tissue papers in Europe and greaseproof papers worldwide, aimed to enhance efficiency and harmonize its operations and production processes across its mills in Europe through the modernization of its IT environment.

We have developed together with Tieto (previously Tietoevry) new Tissue MES Solution and implemented it for our mill operations in 5 countries. New Tissue MES Solution enables us to manage our mills with data, focus on correct things in right time and right order.

The solution
The modernization is based on Tieto's TIPS Industry Solutions & Services, a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). TIPS bridges the gap between the customer's current Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) and mill-specific automation by providing a harmonized system designed for the tissue industry's order-to-cash process.
The system provides full traceability of fibre materials for tissue machines to converted tissue end products to enable reliable cost tracking in production. The system enables the customer to improve sustainability through energy consumption reporting and with online quality management throughout the production process. Digitalized key processes reduce manual work and enable reliable information, leading to improved overall efficiency in the mills and business decision-making.
We are very pleased to have been part of our long-term customer’s successful digitalization journey moving away from multiple separate systems, use of Excel sheets and manual processes. The modernization of Metsä Tissue was done for their mills in Finland, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia, and Germany enabling increased cost efficiency by managing production and material consumption, while detecting and preventing anomalies. With full control and continuous improvement of the production operations from tissue base paper making to converting, the new solution enables improved overall process efficiency and OEE. One of the key benefits is that all the tissue mills, in all countries, now have a unified system enabling full transparency of all operations to lead Metsä Tissue business based on data.
