Cloud-based platform for passive reinsurance operations

Tieto Tech Consulting developed a standalone cloud-based reinsurance application for Vienna Insurance Group to replace manual and semi-automated processes across LIFE and NON-LIFE segments. Built as a scalable, microservices-based solution, the platform supports contract management, reinsurance calculations, and reporting. Already rolled out to multiple VIG companies, the solution helps reduce manual effort, improve auditability, shorten closing cycles, and support further expansion across the group.

Business challenge

Standardize and automate reinsurance operations across VIG

Vienna Insurance Group aimed to modernize and streamline passive reinsurance management across several insurance companies in Central and Eastern Europe. Many reinsurance processes were handled manually or semi-automatically using spreadsheets and separate tools. VIG set out to introduce a centralized system capable of:

  • Managing treaties, facultative contracts, and frontings
  • Performing accurate reinsurance calculations
  • Supporting settlements with reinsurers, financial and regulatory reporting, including IFRS 17.

The solution also needed to support multiple independent insurance companies within the VIG group while allowing configuration for country-specific requirements and integration with existing insurance systems.

Azure-based platform that automates calculations and reporting

Tieto Tech Consulting designed and developed a standalone cloud-based application to manage passive reinsurance across LIFE and NON-LIFE insurance segments. Built on a microservices architecture and deployed on Microsoft Azure, the platform supports:

  • Reinsurance contract management
  • Calculations of reinsurance premiums, commissions, claims, and reserves based on data from core insurance systems
  • Generating structured reports and bordereaux

The platform was implemented in phases, first supporting NON-LIFE insurance operations and later extending to LIFE insurance processes. 
With a shared codebase and configurable modules, the solution allows individual VIG companies to adapt the system to local requirements while maintaining a unified platform across the group. 

Technical details

Microservices-based cloud architecture enabling scalable deployment across multiple locations

The reinsurance platform was developed as a standalone enterprise application using a microservices-based architecture and deployed primarily in Microsoft Azure Cloud. Development followed an agile delivery model, with iterative development cycles and close collaboration with business representatives from participating insurance companies.


The solution was built with a shared core codebase and configurable modules, enabling different insurance companies to adapt the system to country-specific processes while maintaining a unified product across the group. This approach was particularly important because VIG companies operate relatively independently and follow slightly different business workflows.


The architecture also allows for flexible deployment. Depending on operational or regulatory requirements, individual companies can run the solution either in Microsoft Azure or in their own local infrastructure.


The Tieto Tech Consulting team was responsible for solution architecture, development, testing, and project management, with the project team scaling to nearly 20 specialists at peak. After the initial rollout, the engagement evolved into an ongoing product model including L2/L3 support, maintenance, and continuous functional enhancements
