Artificial Reality – making our lives easier

Recently I had a pleasure to take part in the first AI XR forum in Sweden, organized alongside the Gamers United Summit. It has been a great forum to discuss the development of virtual and augmented reality ecosystem as well as AI, and the blockchain.

If you'd like to brush up your basic knowledge of the terms relating to virtual, augmented and mixed reality, I suggest you read one of my earlier articles.

Working on my keynote for AI XR Forum gave me an even bigger boost to investigate the potential connection of artificial intelligence with immersive experiences. I adopted the term "artificial reality" combining the two notions. Having worked on quite a few initiatives, as well as having seen even bigger number of international projects over the past years, I believe that the promise of Artificial Reality is to make our lives easier. I've collected some examples from the projects that help illustrate different components of that promise:

Bridging the gap between expectations and reality

Quite a powerful example supporting this claim is from candidate experience and HR. With immersive tours not only we are showcasing the premises but letting the candidate experience the culture, atmosphere and get to know a little bit about the future colleagues while getting ready to meet them in person. This allows to build more true-to-life expectations about upcoming employment and increase rates of success when being an employee of the new company. We are exploring the best ways to introduce the elements of AI into such experience to take it even further.

Simplifying cognitive load in the data-rich context

One of the most impressive examples comes from the ambitious project that aims to reinvent driving experience with holographic navigation and infotainment system. It safely displays relevant content for the driver and passengers right on the surface of the windscreen. I've been following WayRay for quite a while now, and in a matter of years, the dream has been materializing with the effort of the international team. The AR navigation is above any digital dashboard offered by modern car brands, simply due to the fact that a driver doesn't need to shift his vision & attention away from the road. While we are on a journey to fully self-driving cars, such AR navigation becomes key to safe driving.

Building trust and simplifying decision making

One of the inherent definitions of virtual reality is to replace the physical world. This might be still a little far in many cases, but it is the underlying principle of the Virtual Forest initiative by a number of Finnish and international partners. The aim of this unique experience is to allow forest owners to visualize different scenarios of forest maintenance in order to make the best decisions when it comes to taking care of their forest assets and land. The aim of the service is to bring forest management to the comfort of one's own home, without the need to travel in person to remote locations. At the same time, the virtual model puts together multiple data sources as well as intelligent recommendations that make it easier to comprehend for even less experienced forest owners.

The list of examples is far from exhaustive since the talk time was limited to a TED-Talk style 15 minutes, but there are fantastic examples in gaming, entertainment, industrial sector, skills assessment and training, architecture, construction, and real estate. Just recently I've shared some thoughts about the impact of XR on the retail sector in a TeliaONE podcast episode.

Just as any technology, extended reality tech is not the magic answer to all the problems we are facing. It does bear some challenges that are still to be solved. Yet, it has the undeniable potential to empower humans by simplifying access to information and allowing to make decisions faster. This, consequently, promises to make our lives easier.
