Finavia enhances airport customer experience and sustainability with a centralized data platform
Improving customer experience and sustainability through data

Opportunity
Reduced environmental impact and enhanced digital customer experience
Finavia Corp operates and develops Finland’s network of 20 airports, serving airlines and air travellers with the aim of continuously improving services, customer experience, operational efficiency, and sustainability. The company is committed to the sustainable development of air travel. Helsinki Airport acts as Finland’s main international hub and a key gateway for global traffic.
Finavia leverages its data and analytics partnership with Tieto Tech Consulting to improve, for example, maintenance efficiency as well as the customer experience and sustainability across its airports. Analytics-driven solutions and a centralized data platform support day-to-day decision-making, reduce the environmental impact, and enhance the digital customer experience.
Goal
Safe and smooth air traffic in all weather conditions
At the core of Finavia’s operations are extensive and complex maintenance, logistics, and customer service processes. These processes require precise real-time data for effective management and development. To ensure operational efficiency and sustainability, a unified, reliable, and scalable data platform is essential.
Finavia set out to improve the organization’s ability to react quickly to changing conditions, to streamline customer journeys from the parking areas to the departure gate, and to enable data-driven decision-making at all levels. The company needed data and analytics capabilities that unify information from different systems and views, in order to give employees access to the data and insights needed to support efficient and sustainable airport operations.
Finavia’s goal is to have safe and smooth air traffic in all weather conditions. For runway anti-skid treatment, Finavia primarily uses mechanical methods, such as brushing and plowing. The use of de-icing chemicals is carefully monitored and minimized whenever possible.
Solution
Centralized data platform enabling data-driven decision-making for both managers and frontline employees
Tieto Tech Consulting has served as Finavia’s data and analytics partner since 2023. The collaboration covers the entire data ecosystem: cloud and data architecture design and development, data platform maintenance, data quality management, and the creation of analytics solutions. Tieto’s expert team consists of data engineers and data architects responsible for the ongoing development of the data warehouse and the implementation of new data-driven solutions tailored to Finavia’s needs.
A key part of Finavia’s data and analytics capabilities is the centralized data platform, enabling data-driven decision-making for both managers and frontline employees. Tieto Tech Consulting supports the platform’s maintenance and development and provides both batch-based and real-time analytics for airport maintenance and operations. We also work closely with Finavia’s integration and cloud partners to ensure seamless functionality across solutions. Technologies include Snowflake, AWS, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Azure, and Agile Data Engine.
Benefits
Smoother experience and increased environmental benefits
Reduced use of de-icing chemicals: Data and analytics allow Finavia to more accurately assess treatment needs, significantly reducing chemical consumption without compromising runway safety. Lower usage brings both cost savings and environmental benefits.
More efficient maintenance processes: Improved visibility into maintenance operations has optimized equipment, workforce, and resource planning.
Real-time situational awareness: Enhanced responsiveness to rapidly changing conditions is critical in airport operations. Employees can now make data-driven decisions more independently, improving operational quality and harmonizing decision-making across all airports.
Smoother customer experience: Predictive models provide insights into passenger flow and resource needs, helping Finavia plan smoother customer journeys and reduce congestion through workforce optimization.
Proactive operational development: Advanced data and analytics capabilities help identify areas for improvement and support the proactive development of operational processes. The next phase of collaboration will focus on expanding self-service analytics and enabling Finavia’s units and airports to leverage data even more independently.
Cost efficiency: Streamlined data pipelines and architecture have increased cost efficiency and made analytics solutions easier to maintain and scale.
Summary
Objective: To enhance Finavia’s data and analytics capabilities, which are critical for optimizing customer experience, sustainability, and cost efficiency in large-scale maintenance operations and complex logistics.
Solution: More structured use of operational data, along with continued development and maintenance of a centralized data platform.
