Tieto and Savon Voima Verkko develops GridWise - a real-time information system for network companies

Tieto and Savon Voima Verkko have developed GridWise, a system for real-time analysis and an overall picture of electricity grid status. Gridwise helps electricity network companies with grid management and the management of fault information and various customer tasks. Through the solution, maintenance becomes more efficient, and it speeds up the response times to disturbances such as storms. For consumers, the renewal will translate to fewer and shorter power supply outages.
GridWise information system solution is the result of long-term cooperation and product development carried out by Tieto and Savon Voima Verkko.
Through GridWise, Savon Voima Verkko is able to transmit observations made in fly-over inspections to the GridWise system using a mobile connection without having to land, and the fault repair process can begin immediately and in a highly targeted manner. The movements of those working in network maintenance are also visible on the system, which increases their work safety. If necessary, the situation snap-shot can also be transmitted to the emergency services.

"The most important functionalities of the solution are real-time snap-shots of the grid, electronic transmission of work orders to the information systems of partner companies and the monitoring of work orders. Partners include sub-contractors responsible for grid maintenance, whose work to solve disturbances is made considerably easier and more efficient by images and real-time situation data from the problem area. The information is also transmitted to the electricity network companies' customer service agents and forwarded to energy distribution customers," says Risto Poutiainen, the Director for Energy & Utilities at Tieto.
Reporting services for disturbance data linked to the new system are also being developed for Savon Voima Verkko's new customers. The services can provide customers with information on power supply outages and durations using text messages.
The system responds to the energy department's proposals at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy for measures to improve power supply reliability in the future, lower the impact of power outages to customers, and define the compensation paid to consumers for power supply outages.
