Tieto’s service model supports Tapiola Group’s growth and efficiency requirements
Tapiola and Tieto entered a five-year agreement on the outsourcing of Tapiola’s ICT operating services in autumn 2010. The deal covers the mainframe capacity of the Tapiola Group, mainframe storage and backup capacity, environment management and control, as well as application management for a number of defined systems.
Tapiola is a significant actor in the Finnish finance industry. The Group provides services to private households, companies, large corporations and other organisations. In addition to online services, Tapiola has 170 customer service locations in different parts of Finland. The Group employs more than 3,000 people.

Esa Viitamäki, CIO, says Tieto’s service model is a perfect fit for Tapiola’s efficiency requirements. |
Information systems are extremely critical to Tapiola and its customers. The operating services are large entities made up of components for which the responsibility lies with several different parties. Central goals for the outsourcing were an improvement in quality and cost-efficiency as well as flexible, usage-based pricing.
“Tapiola needs to improve the cost-efficiency of IT services and secure its mainframe competencies. We have high hopes for the cooperation with Tieto,” Esa Viitamäki, CIO, Tapiola, says.
A model for sustainable development
Tapiola’s mainframe services are produced with energy-efficient equipment located in Finland. This not only saves costs but also supports Tapiola’s environmental responsibility commitment.
“We will have mainframe capacity that is flexibly scalable in terms of both volume and costs. Tieto’s global 24/7 service model creates a capacity service that is significantly more cost-efficient than our present operating model,” Mr Viitamäki concludes.
The commissioning project will involve replacing Tapiola’s existing servers by Tieto’s standard capacity service. Tapiola will thus enjoy a modern, energy-efficient service environment and server resources continuously scaled to its capacity requirements. The solution will also secure continuous development of the operating services over the years to come, and will enable, for example, switching to service solutions based on cloud computing architecture.
